Transportation options

Uvita is located 3.5 hours from San Jose and the International Airport, all the road is paved. It is a 4 hour drive from San José. You may come either through the mountains or take the coastal route.

Option 1: Mountain Route (San José-Cartago-San Isidro de Pérez Zeledón-Dominical)

If you decide to come through the mountains, take the Inter-American Highway to the south, passing by Cartago, and head to San Isidro de Pérez Zeledón. At McDonald’s in San Isidro, turn right to Dominical (there is a road panel indicating the direction of Dominical). The paved road becomes a beautiful rural road that winds up through the coastal mountain range and then down towards the Pacific Ocean and Playa Dominical (about 1 hour). At the end of the road San Isidro-Dominical, you reach a T-intersection with some fruit stands and a small Police building before a paved concrete bridge. After crossing the bridge, you will find Dominical downtown on your right. Uvita is about 18 km south of Dominical. Just go on driving and keeping the Pacific Ocean on your right. Before arriving to Uvita, you will see a gas station on your right. Continue driving a few hundred meters. You will enter a commercial area. On your left, you will see a big grocery store called La Corona and the bank Banco de Costa Rica.

Option 2: Coastal Route (San José-Quepos-Dominical)

The coastal route goes via the Caldera Highway, which starts in Ciudad Colón (western area of San Jose). You need to drive on this highway for about 1 hour and 10 min to arrive to the town of Orotina. In proximity of Orotina, you will see directions for the Costanera Highway. Take that exit. This way you will reach the coastal towns of Jaco and Quepos (the popular Manuel Antonio National Park is close to the town of Quepos). When you are in Quepos, follow the signs heading south towards Playa Dominical (about 30 minutes, 40km). At the end of the road from Quepos to Dominical, you will reach a T-intersection with some fruit stands and a small Police building before a paved concrete bridge. On your left, you will see a big grocery store called BM SUPERMERCADO and the bank Banco de Costa Rica.
